Copyright is the legal right given to the original owner for a certain amount of time to print, publish, perform, film or record material. Copyright Law, Designs and Parents Act 1988 is the current copyright law, it gives the original owners of material the right to decide ways in which their material may be used. Without copyright and approval from the record label you do not have consent to use the material in ways which you would want as this is not our original and own material. An example of this is Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke. Their song "Blurred Lines" sounded similar to Marvin Gaye's "Got To Give It Up". The stars lost around $7.9 million due to copyright factors.

My group had to apply for copyright to Adele's recording label, XL Recordings. This is because the record label legally own entitlement to decide ways in which their material, Adele's music can be used. With their approval my group can use Adele's music for our Media coursework and make a music video. Without the record labels consent this could lead to possible difficulties. The company may not have wanted our group to use their music material and could lead to our coursework not being able to continue.

After emailing our record label company applying for copyright we did not get a response saying whether or not we were entitled to use their song for our music video in media, this is understandable because they are a major record label company and have many emails and business aspects to deal with. However, we will ensure that we will email the record label company again, re-applying for copyright.
